All hail, Vigan City!
The extraordinary architectural synthesis of colonial Spanish and Philippine building types resulted in the formation of a distinct townscape and culture that is unparalleled in Southeast Asia. Its name is derived from the word 'Biga', which alludes to a huge taro plant that grows along the Mestizo River.
Although you can visit Vigan anytime, the most ideal time to visit Vigan is during the festival. Every year, on January 25th, for a week, the city is filled with celebration. On different days, Vigan City has a lot of shows to offer just as Bigueño Youth Day involving traditional games, Advocacy Parade, and more. Aside from that, we also have an Agriculture Day, Education Day, the Vigan City Fiesta, and more. This celebration is done to honor and remember Saint Paul, Vigan City’s patron saint.
First and foremost, may I introduce to you the Vigan Cathedral. It is an old church that was built in front of Plaza Salcedo and beside Plaza Burgos. This church is known for its Baroque architecture design with neo-gothic and Pseudo features. Despite being damaged by an earthquake, the church remained beautiful.
Furthermore, besides the Vigan Cathedral, there’s a bazaar that would fulfill your food carvings. Here, you may want to taste coffee, fried rice, takoyaki, the ever-famous shawarma, sisig, hotcakes, pastries, and other more. Make sure to drop by the Vigan Food Festival!
drum rolls here, drum rolls there
Come with me as I go to a very special parade of GEM of the North, Vigan City!
Last January 25, the most awaited Vigan City Fiesta Grand Parade was executed. The parade started at Vigan City Hall and also ended there. It was participated by all the City institutions, from the Governor to the Employees. I saw Mrs. Joan Regua-Tacud, sitting pretty on her float. For me, she truly deserved to be named as the Bigueño Teacher of the Year. It may be hot and tiring but for me, it was such a privilege to be part of the said parade.
I may not be able to attend and watch the shows that Vigan City has offered, but I am forever grateful that I have witnessed some. It is truly amazing how they’ve executed these kinds of events. I will surely look forward events like these.
ONE SOUND, ONE VOICE, ONE FESTIVAL!
