Man of his Letters

Last June 19, 1861, from 11 pm to 12 am in Calamba, Laguna, a man who freed our country from the Spaniards was born. Doctor Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda is the National Hero who used his pen and his powerful words to wake up the senses of Filipinos after approximately 333 years of sleeping. It was he who saved the Filipinos without any violent rebellion.

With the help of Maximo Viola, the best friend of Rizal in Europe, he published the work Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) last 1887 in Berlin, Germany. This novel was dedicated to his Inang Bayan, unveiling the evil deeds of the Spaniards toward the Filipinos. After the Noli Me Tangere, he then published El Filibusterismo (The Reign of the Greed) last 1891 in Ghent, Belgium. His second novel was addressed to the three friars known as GOMBURZA, exposing the social injustice, indecency, and struggle for freedom. His plan was successful. He opened the eyes of the Filipinos but sadly, he had to give up his life for the Philippines’ sake.

Even though he knew to himself that his life would be at risk, he battled for his country until his last breath. He was aware of what would happen next but in his mind, he wanted to lift the chain under his Inang Bayan and fortunately, he had lifted the chain. As a consequence, he faced the sun, and “Consummatum Est” were his last two words before he got shot last December 30, 1896, at 7:03 am in Bagumbayan now called Rizal Park.

In summary, we’ve claimed our freedom against the Spaniards, but we lost a Hero. A hero who never opted to use a sword for a bloody war. Doctor Jose Rizal proved that a pen is mightier than a sword.
